The German Author Gustav Meyrink wrote of the Gulf oil pest disaster in his Novel Petroleum Petroleum in 1903 it starts on page 406.
Here some of the key points he mentions
A huge explosion rocked the gulf of Mexico (Oil retrieval related, at least the talk shortly before the explosion is of the huge oil fields covering the gulf)
Huge amounts of undersea oil reserves released into the Gulf of Mexico spreading out over the whole visible sea surface and being carried out by the gulf stream.
The occupants of the coast had to retreat to inland areas
He continues
The oil was thicker than the usual petroleum and lost no intensity through contact with the sea.
If the oil continues to flow in that quantity, within 27 -29 weeks most of the earths oceans would be affected and rain would never fall again as the water would not be able to evaporate. At best it would rain petroleum.
The people of the world began to panic as they realized the gravity of the situation as the oil did not cease to flow. They then began to rally against the money eating military machinery, demanding machines and soldiers to clean up the mess. A speaker for the people rose up and demanded that soldiers be relieved from their other duties to deal with the situation. the military spoke out that the problem could only be solved with chemicals but the people wanted the soldiers anyway.
